WRITTEN QUESTION E-1997/07
by Luca Romagnoli (ITS)
to the Commission
Subject: The Carlo Parlanti case - sentenced without a fair
trial in the United States
In 2002 Carlo Parlanti, an Italian
citizen, was charged by the US judiciary and subsequently arrested in
Germany because, unknown to himself, he was the subject of an international
arrest warrant and after 11 months' imprisonment in Germany he was
extradited to the United States and sentenced, by the US courts using
contradictory procedural methods, to nine years' imprisonment for an
offence of which he has always declared himself innocent and of which he is
in all probability not guilty. The appeal proceedings started in February.
In view of all this, can the
Commission say whether it intends to take steps to allow this EU citizen
all the guarantees of unconditional defence in the appeal court?
What action and diplomatic pressure
on the US government does the Commission consider appropriate in order to
provide absolute guarantees that the accused will be defended with fairness
and justice?
